Computer Security

Viruses, worms, and other threats spread fast. Unless you keep up to date with the latest updates and virus protection, your computer and data are at risk. Worse yet, a compromised machine becomes a platform from which hackers launch further attacks.

How to secure your computer

NOTE: you must have administrator privileges to perform the following steps.

All computers: Go to www.cso.uiuc.edu/software/sls, log in using your netid and password, and download VirusScan 7. It is free to all University personnel.

Windows NT: Go to www.windowsupdate.com and perform updates. You need to do this regularly in order to keep your computer safe (at least once a week). It is also possible to configure your computer to automatically apply available updates at recurring intervals.

(continued next column)

Windows ME and 2000: In the Control Panel, open Automatic Updates and turn on Keep my computer up to date. (If you use a dialup connection, you may also want to select the checkbox to be notified before downloading.) If your control panel doesn't have an Automatic Updates icon, go to www.windowsupdate.com and download it.

Windows XP: Right-click the My Computer icon and choose Properties. Select the Automatic Updates tab and turn on keep my computer up to date. (If you use a dialup connection, you may want to select the checkbox to be notified before downloading.)

Windows 98: Go to www.windowsupdate.com and install the latest updates. Be sure to install Critical Updates Notification, which will tell you any time new security patches become available. Whenever it notifies you of new updates, always install them promptly.
