SCS Mail Migration

SCS currently uses mail services which reside on our IRIX based server, Polaris. We have installed a new mail server which is UNIX based and has better spam and virus filtering. This server has been in production for over a year. Users have reported that the spam filtering is much better.

We would like to encourage all faculty and staff to move to the new mail server. To encourage use of the new server, there is no charge for the first 100 MB of usage. The cost after the first 100 MB is $0.01 MB/Month. At the time of this posting, we charge $0.25 MB/Month on Polaris. The new mail server also offers services not available on Express Mail; one of those is a much bigger limit on attachments. We can also create multiple mailing lists which can be used by departments or groups.

Your email will now be handled by the new server, mail.scs.uiuc.edu. You will need to change your email program to use this server as your POP3S or IMAPS server. If you had been using polaris as your SMTP server as well, you should set your mail client to use mail.scs.uiuc.edu as its SMTP server also. Webmail users should now use the following URL: https://mail.scs.uiuc.edu/

More information can be found here, including information on continuing to use Pine with the new mail server.

Once you are confident that all your mail is properly located on the new mail server, you should remove your old archived mail from polaris so that you are no longer charged the disk space usage fees. To erase the old mail, you can use the delete-polaris-mail command from the polaris prompt.

For More information, please call the SCS Help Desk @ 3-6035.
