On January 8, 2005,
telnet and FTP will no longer be available on
polaris.scs.uiuc.edu. You are advised to use SSH and SFTP to connect
instead. More about these services can be found under
ssh
information.
In addition, insecure (non-SSL) pop3 and imap are being discontinued on
polaris. You must use the SSL versions of these services instead, with the
server name 'www.scs.uiuc.edu', in order to get your mail from polaris.

NEW! CSD Has been updated
The Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) has been updated with the
January 2004 and April 2004 updates.
Catalyst has been upgraded to version 4.9.1,
these
bugs have been fixed.
Several Modules of the life-science modeling software InsightII have
been ported to linux. See the
list of modules from Accelrys.
Contact us if you want to run InsighII on Linux. The minimum system requirements are: 1 GHz Processor, 512 MB RAM, Red Hat WS 2.1, Nvidia Quadro4 980 XGL graphics card.

Release 2004/1 of ICSD (inorganic crystallographic database) is available
for windows platform. Contact us for media check-out.
If your group contributed to the
scientfic software program, you can install the new version on your groups Unix, Windows, Linux, Sun Computers.
U of I faculty, students, and staff can
download ChemDraw for use on Windows or Macintosh computers
NEW! SPAM Filtering for SCS Email accounts
The Computer Center is pleased to announce a new SPAM filtering
service for all SCS e-mail accounts. Please read the
announcement for more information.
NEW! Revised Users Guide
A set of
documents to assist new users of the computing resources at
the School Of Chemical Sciences. Document includes a description
of computing services, computing platforms, general Center information
and frequently asked questions (FAQ's).
NEW! The Vizlab
The 3D-Visualization Laboratory
(Vizlab) provides the hardware, software and personnel resources
to train students, professors and staff in state-of-the-art
techniques in modeling of complex chemical and biological systems.
The Vislab was partially funded with a grant from the Dreyfus
Foundation, and is now availble for research and upper division class use.
