SCS User's Guide

One of the primary services available with your SCS account is scientific software and computer time for scientific computing. We have a large number of software packages available; a list, with startup instructions and links to documentation, is available here.

We have one 4-processor SGI Origin 300, polaris.scs.uiuc.edu, as our primary compute system. As this machine is a shared resource used by many people, we ask that you only run one compute job at a time and set jobs up to use only 1 or 2 CPUs. We are fairly lenient with this policy, but if you violate it too often so that the system is slowed down unacceptably, we will kill your compute jobs and lock your account. If you need to use more CPU, you can use the Octanes in the vizlab; there are 11 single-processor Octanes and 1 dual-processor Octane2, and they will run all the same software that is available on polaris. You can log in to them from polaris using SSH and start jobs on them just as you would on polaris.
