SCS User's Guide

SSH, or Secure Shell, is a program that operates similarly to telnet or rsh, but it encrypts all network traffic, including passwords and other sensitive information. It also uses public-key cryptography to confirm the identity of computers you are trying to log in to in order to prevent spoofing attacks. For these reasons, we require the use of SSH rather then telnet for logging in to SCS computer systems.

SSH is available for almost all computer platforms. For Windows, please visit CITES' SSH for Windows page for information and to download PuTTY for Windows (free for all personnel). In addition to command-line login access, this program provides secure X forwarding for use with eXceed. For MacOS 9.x and earlier, please use MacSSH, a free SSH2 client. For Sun or SGI UNIX platforms, current versions of IRIX and Solaris both come with SSH client and server programs. If you don't have SSH on your machine now or need help configuring SSH, please contact . You can also obtain the source code for OpenSSH and compile it yourself for just about any UNIX platform.
